Member Spotlight: Chrissy Kuczynski

Our spotlight member this month has been around since we had a bootcamp class called Reboot, and that's how you know she's an OG member! Get to know more about 8am class staple Chrissy below!

Q: What brought you to Renew and how long have you been a member?

A: I started at Renew in early 2019 when a friend of mine convinced me to try a new boot camp called Reboot that they were starting.  I thought I would just do the 6 week session and be done with it, but I really enjoyed it and decided to continue.

Q: Where are you from? If not here, when did you move here?

A: I grew up in New York about an hour north of NYC.  I moved here in 2000 fully expecting to stay only 5 years or so, but I quickly fell in love with Austin and all that there is to do here. Even though it is hard being so far from family, I can’t imagine moving back anytime soon.

Q: One year from now, what do you hope to have mastered? What skill or lift do you hope to add to your wheelhouse?

A: I would love to feel more comfortable with overhead squats.  I have a mental block when trying to squat with a bar over my head and it’s difficult for me to trust my body to get lower than a slight bend of my knees.

Q: What’s your favorite movement?

A: Deadlifts are definitely my favorite.

Q: What’s something Renew has taught you about your fitness?

A: I have learned that I am stronger than I think I am.  The coaches have always encouraged me to push myself a little harder than I sometimes want to, but it has helped my confidence grow.

Q: What do you do outside of the gym? Both for work and play?

A: Prior to having kids, I was an electrical engineer.  I “retired” when my oldest was born 14 years ago and have been blessed to be a stay at home mom ever since.   Most of my free time is spent being my kids’ chauffeur to all of their sporting events and school activities.  We recently joined Mesa Rim and have all enjoyed indoor rock climbing as a family.

Q: What's your favorite eatery in Austin?

A: I love Café Java.  Their breakfasts are some of the best I’ve had in Austin.

Q: Tell us something we don’t know about you.

A: I come from a large NY Italian family.  Both of my parents grew up in the Bronx, so I can attest to the fact that many of the stereotypes you see on TV are 100% accurate (think Sopranos without real ties to the mafia).  Sunday dinners at my grandparents’ house were a staple for most of my childhood, and it is probably one of the things I miss the most since moving to Austin.

Chrissy, we're so glad you stuck around! Thank you for being an invaluable part of this crew.
