Anyone who worked out in The Shed in the early days of Renew automatically deserves our utmost respect. Learn more about our favorite boomerang members, the Wussows!
Q: What brought you to Renew and how long have you been a member?
Katie & Travis: We were a part of Renew at the very beginning (in the shed), and what was attractive to us was the community and hearing the buzz from our friends about how much CrossFit was helping. When we moved back to Austin last year, coming back to Renew was a no-brainer. It's been fun to reconnect with some very old friends and make new ones. It’s also great to see how far the gym has come and how much Renew has to offer now.
Q: Where are you from? If not here, when did you move here?
Travis is from Plano and Katie is from Rockwall. We met at UT in undergrad and got married after college. In total, we lived in Austin for about 15 years before we moved away in 2015. This city has changed a lot in the last 10 years!
Q: One year from now, what do you hope to have mastered? What skill or lift do you hope to add to your wheelhouse?
Travis: I'd like to have muscle ups back and be able to do butterfly pullups.
Katie: I’ve been working for a few months on some physical therapy for my lower back. I’m feeling great and hoping to see some big gains in my deadlift!
Q: What’s your favorite movement?
Travis: Clean and jerk, obviously.
Katie: I like cleans, too. Jerks I can live without. And I’m always down to squat.
Q: What’s something Renew has taught you about your fitness?
Travis: Consistency is key. I love the simplicity of Renew programming. We don't have a Part A, Part B, Part C. It's just good, old school CrossFit, and it delivers results.
I have also been doing nutrition coaching with Becky, and it has been an absolute game changer. I've been able to change and build habits that are fundamentally changing my relationship with food and alcohol.
Katie: One thing I love about Renew is the focus on the other elements of fitness besides working out. They integrate stress management, sleep, stress, and other forms of movement besides CrossFit. It’s a really holistic approach.
Q: What do you do outside of the gym? Both for work and play?
Travis: I'm a government relations lawyer at Jackson Walker LLP. It's the firm where I started out my career, and I rejoined the firm when we moved back to Austin. Outside of work, I am a mediocre pickleball and tennis player, and I love fly fishing.
Katie: We have two daughters aged 14 and 12, so a lot of my time goes to being a parent of awesome teens and tweens. It’s the best. I also run the people team of an Austin-based company called 49 Financial.
Q: What's your favorite eatery in Austin?
Travis: Hard to pick just one. Katie and I have a lot of great memories at Uchiko.
Katie: Picking favorites is hard. One place I love is Asti, a local Italian spot in Hyde Park. It’s been around forever and it’s always awesome.
Q: Tell us something about the other person we don't know.
Travis: Katie has seen every episode of The Big Bang Theory multiple times.
Katie: Travis used to have long, flowing blonde hair and it was fabulous.
Katie & Travis, we're sorry we made you pick a favorite restaurant but you both did great. We’re lucky to have you back in the Renew family!
