Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the CrossFit Open 2025 & Friday Night Lights

It’s that time of year again. The CrossFit Open is here! Here’s the quick and dirty in case you didn’t know (or can’t keep up with how many times it’s changed over the last few years):

  • The CrossFit Open is a worldwide, 3-week competition led by CrossFit HQ. Though it has the word "competition" in there, it's more of an excuse for CrossFitters to cheer their peers, challenge themselves, and meet milestones. This year, the Open runs from February 27th to March 17th.
  • Every week during The Open, a top secret workout is released on Thursday nights, and athletes have until the following Monday to complete said workout.
  • To give athletes the opportunity to do the workout in a little competition and a lot of community -- Renew puts on Friday Night Lights, a time and place where PRs and pride shine like the Texas sun; when each Friday after the workout announcement, the Renew Crew at-large can partake in the fun like the big Games athletes do, but in the comfort of our own gym.

Do you have questions? We have answers. ⬇️

“I dunno if this is for me… I’m pretty new to the whole CrossFit thing.”

  • We say that CrossFit is for anyone and everyone because it is infinitely scalable -- and the same goes for The Open! You don’t have to have every movement or be the best in the gym to participate, there are divisions and categories for all types of athletes, and at the end of the day, this is about testing our fitness and having fun -- together. We’ve had Renewbs do the Open who’d been members for only a few weeks, members who were well into their pregnancies, and members celebrating their 65th birthdays! Truly we say to you: it’s for anyone and everyone.

“Wow, okay, sounds great! How do I sign up?”

  • Registration is a two-part process. First: Register with us if you want to compete under those sparkly magical Friday Night Lights (and if you want a shirt). Make sure you register by 2/27 so we have time to order shirts!
  • Then, go here and register with CrossFit HQ to participate in the leaderboard and scoring. Make sure you assign us as your affiliate so we can keep an accurate score! After completing each week's workout, you'll need to submit your scores via the CrossFit HQ leaderboard online. Our coaches will validate your scores to ensure accuracy.

“Do I have to register with both Renew and HQ?”

  • Registering with HQ isn’t required in order to compete on Friday nights. However, we really strongly encourage it. Our gym is part of the broader CrossFit community working toward wellness all over the world, and we want to support and participate in the global sport that’s bigger than one entity.

“How much does it cost?”

  • Registering for Friday Night Lights with us is $45. That gets you a competitor's shirt, access to participate in our Friday night workouts, ensures you've got a coach leading/judging your efforts, and scores you snacks and drinks over the weeks.
  • Registering on CrossFit HQ is $20. This gets you access to the scoreboard with Renew, as well as across the world!

"I can't make it to one or some of the Fridays... is it worth signing up?"

  • Aaaaaabsolutely. Not only will we be doing the workouts on Friday nights, but we'll be doing them in class on Fridays as well. So if you can't make it at night -- come during the day!
  • Or, if you have to miss a whole Friday but still want to get your score in, you're welcome to find a judge and do the workout during Open Gym on Saturdays, or you can try your luck at asking a coach to judge you if they're available and willing. (More on judging later after you sign up.)

"Tell me more about how Friday Night Lights works at Renew."

  • Every Friday during the Open (February 28, March 7th, and 14th), from 4p-7p, we’ll compete under those Friday night lights together in community.
  • As a participant, you will be sent the heat sheet ahead of each FNL. This heat sheet is how you’ll sign up for a timeslot to compete. There will be <8 competitors per heat, along with <8 judges. In this same heat sheet, you’ll also be given an opportunity to sign up to judge another athlete. We ask that everyone participate here so no one person is stuck judging someone for 4 hours straight! Teamwork dreamwork.
  • Judges will be responsible for counting reps and verifying scores for each athlete’s performance. There will be printed score sheets provided by CrossFit HQ that we’ll use, and each athlete will be responsible for logging their scores by the following Monday evening via CrossFit HQ’s scoring system.
  • On the final FNL, we’ll throw a party. We’ll have a few vendors present, sips, snacks, and other treats. So if you aren’t competing, at least come hang!

Now that we answered every question you could ever come up with, it's time to register with Renew here to participate in Friday Night Lights, and register here with CrossFit HQ.
