Member Spotlight: Alix Gershun & Travers Bray

One loves blueberries, the other runs in Texas summer heat on purpose. Together, they’re Alix and Travers—and they’ve been making moves (and gains) at Renew for nearly a year. Learn more about them below!

Q: What brought you to Renew and how long have you been a member?

Travers and Alix: We joined at the same time almost 1 year ago. We were curious about switching up our workouts and were considering CrossFit. Renew stood out on our google search for its great reviews, and that it’s conveniently located about a mile away. We signed up and haven’t looked back since!

Q: Where are you from? If not here, when did you move here?

Alix: I grew up in Connecticut. I lived in NYC for a few years before moving to Austin in 2021 in search of a more outdoorsy lifestyle.

Travers: I’m from Mississippi. I moved from Austin 7 years ago with hopes to get a job in the tech industry as a software developer. Austin is now home for me and I love the fitness and healthy lifestyle I’ve created here.

Q: One year from now, what do you hope to have mastered? What skill or lift do you hope to add to your wheelhouse?

Alix: pull-ups

Travers: I hope to have mastered better form and increased mobility. When I started at Renew I was pretty stiff and had gotten into a habit of not stretching. I’ve always thought rope climbs were very cool and interesting! I hope to be able to increase that skill.

Q: What’s your favorite movement?

Alix: Rowing and clean & jerks (shoutout to Rebar!)

Travers: Pull-ups or anything involving shoulder strength.

Q: What’s something Renew has taught you about your fitness?

Alix: I can do more than I think I can, Renew has helped me build confidence in the gym. Weights that were originally 1-rep max, I can now do reps of.

Travers: I’m way stronger going into a workout with light warm ups and loosening up my muscles with light movement + medium lifting.

Q: What do you do outside of the gym? Both for work and play?

Alix: I’m a Program Manager at Whole Foods Market, overseeing part of the delivery and pickup experience. Apart from work, I love doing anything outside including hiking, skiing and traveling. We skied in Telluride this year, and hope to make it to Hawaii in the fall! In Austin, I love going to Barton springs and walks around Townlake. Day to day, you can find me with my nose in a book, drinking tea, and eating my latest snack find from Whole Foods.

Travers: I work at IBM as a Software Developer, but escape from coding with writing music, playing video games and trying to stay fit. Like Alix I also love traveling. One of my favorite things to do is explore new National parks. In Austin, some of my favorite things to do include hanging with friends by a pool, eating out, or going to Alamo Drafthouse to catch a movie.

Q: What's your favorite eatery in Austin?

Alix: It makes it easy that I also love Komé. But breakfast is my favorite, so Cenote, breakfast tacos at El Chilito, or anywhere that serves pancakes are my go-to’s.

Travers: I love anything Japanese related, but my heart belongs to Komé on Airport Blvd. Yes, also of course I love Austin BBQ like Terry Blacks

Q: Tell us something about the other person we don't know.

Alix: Travers is extremely talented at all things music - playing, creating, producing, mixing. Ask him anything about guitars or amps and he will know! Also, I don’t understand how he survives, but he will go on runs in the middle of the day during the summer here and be totally fine.

Travers: Alix loves eating fruit. She could survive off of blueberries. Also, she is strangely very good at drawing doodles on birthday/holiday cards.

Alix & Travers, we love having you both as part of the Renew crew! Here’s to more pull-ups, rope climbs, and maybe a few more national parks in the future.
