CrossFit Renew is celebrating Bring A Friend Week March 28 - April 1. This is part two of a three-part blog series introducing our "friends" to the Foundations of CrossFit. For Part One, click here. I am sure before you came to CrossFit, you had an idea of what you were walking into. Some of you may have expected to pass out halfway through the WOD. Others of you may have scheduled an appointment with your chiropractor for the day following your first CrossFit WOD, anticipating an injury. There are many different views of CrossFit, with many different definitions. Depending on what day you came into CrossFit Renew, your definition may vary from someone who came on another day. Fortunately, CrossFit has been defined, so that when your friends ask you "What is CrossFit?" you can give them a better definition than "It's a lot of burpees....it's fun, just come try it". Hopefully this will also give YOU a better understanding of CrossFit and what you can expect when you join Foundations (assuming you enjoyed CrossFit Renew as much as we enjoyed having you). CrossFit is constantly varied, functional movements, performed at a high intensity.
When you walk into the box, you can expect a workout completely different than what you saw the day before. We believe that life is constantly changing, we cannot plan for the unexpected, so we believe that your workouts should be the same way. We want to essentially shock your body; we believe this is how you achieve results, it is how you become more fit.
It is exactly what it sounds like. These are movements that you will see in your day to day life. We want you to be able to take what you do in CrossFit and replicate it in your day to day life. While helping your neighbor move, you wouldn't bicep curl their TV. You would squat down and shrug that box up to your waist, or chest; in CrossFit we call that a clean. The movements that you do in CrossFit will make you a more functional human.
Most people who disagree with CrossFit, misunderstand the meaning of high intensity. This does NOT mean move as fast as possible regardless of form. It means moves as quickly as possible, or move the heaviest load, while maintaining good form.CrossFit is not a bunch of adrenaline junkies, throwing weight around at an insanely fast pace. Intensity varies from person to person. This is why we do Foundations at CrossFit Renew. We want people to learn to move well and introduce them to intensity. We ramp up the intensity with each foundational workout, so that when you are introduced to your first intermediate class, you feel comfortable. Our coach's are there to encourage you and push you when your mental game is lacking. So now that you have a better definition of what CrossFit IS, and what it should look like, you can do what CrossFitter's do best-go talk about it! In our Foundations class (which will begin April 7) we will give you a more in depth definition of CrossFit, why we believe it is the most effective way to improve your fitness, and why you see results when you workout with these 3 principles in mind.
